The Gift of Rest

During the holidays, it can feel like every moment is claimed by tasks, events, or obligations. Rest often gets pushed to the bottom of the list - as if it’s something we’ll fit in only after everything else is done. But here’s the truth: rest isn’t a reward, it’s a resource. Without it, our bodies, minds, and spirits simply can’t keep pace with the season’s demands.
Rest doesn’t always mean hours of sleep (though that’s important too). It can be as simple as giving yourself five quiet minutes, a gentle walk, or a pause from screens. When we view rest as intentional recovery, we create space to show up with more energy and presence for the people and traditions that matter most.
Ways to Practice Restful Renewal
1. Redefine productivity.Productivity isn’t just about output - it’s also about sustainability. True productivity includes breaks that refuel your focus and creativity.
2. Try active rest.Rest doesn’t always mean stillness. Stretching, yoga, or a short walk can calm your nervous system and restore balance.
3. Build in “mini-rests.”Don’t wait for long vacations to recharge. Incorporate short pauses into your day: a deep breath before a meeting, a cup of tea without multitasking, or a few minutes outside.
4. Protect your sleep.Sleep is the foundation of restoration. Prioritize consistency over perfection - aim for a calming pre-bed routine, even if your schedule feels hectic.
5. Give yourself permission.Perhaps the hardest step is simply allowing yourself to rest without guilt. Remember, you don’t need to earn rest - it is what enables everything else.
A Reflection to Start With
What does rest look like for you this season? What’s one way you can gift yourself more of it this week?
